Silver Threepence

Silver ThreepenceThe Three Pence coin first appeared during the reign of Edward VI (1547-1543) , when a new set of coin denominations were created. The silver threepence was not produced every year and went in and out of favour, in so much that the London Mint used other mints for the production of these coins, The other mints used included the ones at Bristol, York, Aberystwyth, Oxford. The silver threepence continued to be minted until 1945, the larger 12-sided nickel-brass threepence coin was introduced in 1937, alongside the silver coin, this was a cautionary measure in case the 12 sided coin was not popular. There is still a silver threepence produced yearly but this is part of the Maundy Money.

The silver penny is still minted today but as part of the Maundy Money, this is where the Queen in a ceremony gives a number of pensioners a quantity of silver coins specially minted, the ceremony takes place at Easter each year.
