One Pound Coin

Silver One PoundThe One Pound coin was introduced to the British monetary system in 1983, to replace the One Pound note. The One Pound note was finally withdrawn from circulation in 1988, so for 5 years there were a pound note and a pound coin in use.

Between 1983 and 2008 the design on the reverse side of the coin changed each year to represent the four countries in the United Kingdom, England (1987 1992 1997 2002 2007), Scotland *1984 1989 1994 2004), Northern (1986 1991 1996 2001 2006)  Ireland and Wales (1985 1990 1995 2000 2005). The Royal Arms were used in 1983, 1988, 1993, 2003, 2008. In 2009 it was the Coat of Arms for the City of London and 2010 the Coat of Arms for Belfast. No One Pound Coins wre issued for general circulation in 1998 and 1999, though they were issues within the yearly collectors sets.

It is widely understood that just under 2.5% of all One Pound Coins in circulation are infact counterfeit.

The One Pound proof coins shown below represent the best value for collectors and investors alike, the mintage numbers are kept low, which in turn helps keep their value.

Fifty Pence Coin

In 1969 the UK Royal Mint introduced the Fifty Pence Coin, it was to be used instead of the Ten Shilling note and was part of the UK transformation to the decimal coinage system. In 1997 the size of the fifty pence coin was reduced from 30 millimetres to 27.3 millimetres.
