Silver Five Pound Coin

Silver Five Pound

The first Five Pound Coin was minted in 1990 with a mass of 28.28 grams and having a diameter of 38.61 millimetres. The ones minted for everyday general usage is produced in cupro-nickel, an alloy of approximately 75% copper, and 25% nickel, but special Silver and Gold five pound coins versions are also minted.

The Five Pound Coin are occasionally introduced by the Royal Mint for special events, they are produced more as a souvenir, rather than everyday usage, and to confuse everyone they are known as crowns. A crown is widely known as 'Five Shillings' or 'Twenty Five pence' but this was changed in 1990.

The Five Pound proof coins shown below represent the best value for collectors and investors alike, the mintage numbers are kept low, which in turn helps keep their value.
